Tim misses out again

FULL marks to director Tim Burton for helping favourite star Johnny Depp to earn his third best actor Oscar nomination in five years.

An American based in London, Burton is easily the most imaginative director of his generation. But his strength is also his weakness. And, unlike Depp, he's yet to be recognised as one of the best.

None of his live action films from Edward Scissorhands to Batman to Sleepy Hollow has earned him so much as a single Oscar nomination.

Even his 2006 'best animation' nod for Corpse Bride had to be shared with a colleague, Mike Johnson.

True to form, this week's Academy Award ignored Burton again in favour of Depp, with Sweeney Todd earning further ticks for art direction and costumes.

Burton will literally have to go back to his own drawing board to find personal recognition... assuming he doesn't want to slit his own throat first!
