Protege (18)

ANDY Lau was so good in Infernal Affairs that Martin Scorsese remade it as The Departed - and then cheekily walked off with the best director Oscar.

Here, in another classy Hong Kong film, Lau plays a diabetic drug dealer called the "Banker" who is in need of a trustworthy heir.

Mirroring Traffic's ability to offer a multi-layered treatment of a subject with serious implications for everything from the world economy to the plight of individual junkies and farmers, Protege explores all aspects of this seedy underworld even to the point of including some fascinating facts and figures.

Directed by Derek Yee (One Nite in Mongkok), the stunts are grippingly real, too.

As with Infernal Affairs, the root of the film is the undercover work of a special agent.

Nick (Daniel Wu) has spent years on the Banker's trail, but will he become corrupted himself first before he can get to the next layer beyond his initial target?
