Seal rises to occasion

YOU CALL THE TUNES! CBSO, Symphony Hall.

POP pickers of the Midlands made their choice of music and the CBSO responded with a first-class performance of popular classics.

Thousands of entries were received when concert-goers at Symphony Hall were asked to vote for their most-loved works and last night the orchestra played highlights from the Top Ten which made a well-balanced programme from eight different composers.

Top was Sir Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations (Nimrod), which was lovingly performed by the orchestra he conducted at its inaugural concert in Birmingham Town Hall in 1920.

Under the baton of Michael Seal, the CBSO were in outstanding form, with soloists Peter Jablonski (piano), Laurence Jackson (violin) and Eduardo Vassallo (cello) making splendid contributions.

Brilliant playing by Jablonski of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Rachmaninov's second piano concerto, saw the audience response peak in admiration.

VERDICT: ****
