Review: AC/ DC at LG Arena, NEC
Apr 24 2009 Review by Andy Coleman
FOR those who have rocked at the NEC Arena, we salute you! AC/DC headlined the final concert at the arena - now sponsored by LG - before it closes for a five month refurbishment.
Fittingly, their last song, For Those About To Rock, featured a six cannon salute that shook the ageing building but thrilled the sold out audience.
To the uninitiated AC/DC must appear an oddball bunch. Frontman Brian Johnson is 61, wears a flat cap and at times resembles Jack Duckworth, especially when he launches into a new track called Big Jack. He also says ‘Thank you very much’, Tommy Cooper-style.
Guitarist Malcolm Young and bassist Cliff Williams remain rooted to the spot at the back of the stage until called upon to advance eight paces to supply backing vocals. Then they retreat to their place alongside bespectacled drummer Phil Rudd who, cigarette in mouth, seems unaware of the on-stage smoking restrictions.
Then there’s Angus. Mr Young - brother of Malcolm - is 54 but still wears a schoolboy uniform and duckwalks across the stage while playing guitar. He’s been doing it for 36 years.
