Music: Roy Wood promises to belt out the hits at LG Arena in Birmingham
BRUMMIE music legend Roy Wood is the special guest of Status Quo at their LG Arena show tomorrow.
The gig couldn’t have come at a better time because the 62-year-old former Wizzard, ELO and Move member is planning a new album release.
“Some years ago I recorded a track with my old mate Jeff Lynne and I’m hoping to include it on a new compilation I’d like to put together next year,” he reveals.
“I’m gonna put together some of the tracks I particularly like, along with some unreleased songs.”
For tomorrow’s show he’ll be concentrating on the hits.
“We only have 45 minutes and we’ll just give ‘em what they want,’’ he laughs. ‘‘It’ll be mostly hits, but I may put some new ones in as well.
“We’ve not had a lot of work this year so I just hope the voice holds out.”
Roy has gathered a sizeable band around him for the show.
“We’ve got four sax players who have played with everyone from BB King to Stevie Wonder, and after the tour a couple of them are off to play with Jamiroquai,” he says. “On keyboards is Danny McCormack who was musical director for Van Morrison, and the rhythm section is from The Climax Blues Band. I’ll be playing guitar and bagpipes.”
The new album is not the only project Roy has in mind for next year. “I may start a record company if I can’t keep the band together, which is a shame ‘cos I’ve gotta say it’s the best band I’ve ever had.
“I’d quite like to write my autobiography, but I’d have to do it myself and not use a ghost writer.”
