Music: Iglu & Hartly plan to party in Birmingham

Iglu & Hartly

LOS ANGELES-based Iglu & Hartly bring their party vibe to Birmingham O2 Academy on Wednesday.

We caught up with vocalist/keyboard player Jarvis Anderson and fired some questions at him.

You’re from sunny California so do you regret arranging your UK tour for cold and snowy January and February?

Well, I’m originally from Chicago so the cold and wet is something I’ve dealt with before. And having done previous winter tours in the UK we are well prepared and ready!  Give us hot chocolate!

Your last show was in Hollywood at the beginning of December - what have you been up to for the past few weeks? Recording and writing new tunes. Practicin’ for the tour obviously, and hangin’ with the boys and girls havin’ a good time.

Your hit In This City has featured on the Match of the Day soccer TV programme in the UK and on the basketball video game, NBA 2K10. Which means the most to you - soccer or basketball, and why? I grew up playing soccer and basketball.  I wore eyeglasses and they always fell off during basketball but stayed on during soccer, so I pick soccer. But basketball is pretty fun – the other guys always play but I feel like soccer is actually more impressive to be good at.

Have you seen David Beckham play for LA Galaxy? I haven’t had the privilege yet, but apparently he doesn’t like playing on the team....

What’s the news on the Iglu & Hartley recording front? We’re busy writing and recording the new record, we’re going to call it ‘Alpabetical Phonetical’. It’s going to be great. Lots of new sounds; more tribal, African, traditional influences as well.

Any memories of visiting Birmingham during your last tour? We had a great time in your beautiful city, we always do. But last time we were there our guitarist Simon got knocked in the face and robbed, but we know that was an isolated incident. We’re ready to make some brand new more ‘love-oriented’ memories.

What can we expect from your show on Wednesday? Lots of new material, new moves and some good times! We’ll be up and about chatting.

If you weren’t a musician what job would you do? I don’t really picture myself doing anything else but I could always learn how to scuba dive and become a professional treasure hunter!

Which bands are you listening to at the moment? I’m listening to James McFly’s new stuff – it’s awesome. And a lot of Marvin Gaye and Tina Turner.
