Scrooge, Alexandra Theatre

It seemed strange to be watching this musical version of A Christmas Carol so long after the festive season.

But not as strange as seeing chirpy chappy Shane Richie play it straight.

This was no East End wide-boy, but a miserable, acerbic Scrooge, although Richie still managed to show plenty of subtle comic touches and bring an extra sparkle to the role.

This family show with its impressive special effects, lively musical numbers and heart-warming moral tale, was a delight.

Ghost Jacob Marley and the three spirits particularly thrilled as they disappeared through walls and in puffs of smoke with effects that wouldn't be out of place in a magic show.

Richie held the show together with help from a strong supporting cast, but was overshadowed by the youngest members of the performance, especially an adorable Tiny Tim.

Song and dance routines from I Hate People to Thank You Very Much drew me quickly in till I wasn't even bothered that it was no longer Christmas.

The Charles Dickens story is, after all, a timeless classic. I did, however, leave the theatre full of the spirit of Christmas, even if there is 11 months left to go.

Scrooge continues until January 26.
