The Crucible, Patrick Centre, Birmingham Hippodrome

THE mass hysteria at the heart of the Salem witch trials in puritan America in 1692 is superbly captured by the splendid Stage 2 youth theatre.

What better way for the company, whose members are aged from just seven to 21, to celebrate its 20th anniversary?

Arthur Miller's excellent play, largely based on the trial records, is grippingly, and often menacingly, told by this talented young cast.

At the centre of the story is the vengeful "crying out" allegations made by young girls in the village that led to scores of women being tried as witches.

The outstanding production ultimately pits innocent farmer John Proctor, brilliantly played by Scott Westwood, against the zealous witch-finders, headed by Rev Parris and, later, Deputy Governor Danforth, equally well played by Matthew Urwin and Mike Haydon.

Performances end tomorrow. .
