And then there were none, Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton

AN often spooky production on an excellent panelled set poses questions all the way through, as a house party of people marooned on an island are murdered one by one in retribution for their supposed crimes.

All the questions are answered eventually - except one that was never intended: where on earth are we to suppose that convenient chain and hook came from, to dangle outside the french window and facilitate the final suicide by hanging?

The plot, nevertheless, is Agatha Christie at her best. The play started life as Ten Little Unmentionables in 1943, became Ten Little Indians and has now adopted its current title - and it's a cracker.

Gerald Harper heads the cast as the retired judge who takes charge of the situation.

The background cloud effects are excellent, but the portentous music could surely be turned down a notch. Joe Harmston's splendid production ends on Saturday.
