Swan Lake, Birmingham Hippodrome

THIS Peter Wright production of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake is more than 25 years old but why change something when it works?

Without doubt it's one of the jewels in Birmingham Royal Ballet's crown, it looks glorious, sounds fantastic and pulls the heart strings at the right moments.

Some of the scenes are so beautiful they cause gasps from the audience and all of the huge sets and costumes, whether the swans on the lake or the courtiers in the palace, are incredibly lavish.

In the lead roles, Chi Cao is a masterful Prince Siegfried while Nao Sakuma plays a tremulous Odette and a triumphant Odile.

Kosuke Yamamoto also makes a lively Benno, friend to the prince, who is left to pick up the pieces at the ballet's close.

There are countless opportunities for dancers from across the company to shine as cygnets, princesses and courtesans.

But the star of this show remains the production itself which continues to sit comfortably alongside BRB's more recent creations.
