Over The Rainbow: The Eva Cassidy Story, Garrick Theatre, Lichfield

EVA Cassidy has become a phenomenon, almost an industry since her death in 1998. A little known singer from Washington DC who died of cancer at the age of 33 she is now, ten years on, an international star with a string of top ten hits and albums.

Over the Rainbow is a sort of bio-show with Faye Tozer, ex-STEPS, excellent as Eva, singing Cassidy's songs from sad and lingering to the up beat Blues Alley numbers in a simple style without making it look like Stars in Their Eyes.

Her scene as the dying Eva, though, steals the show with a display of powerful, emotive acting - a real pass the tissues job.

She is well supported by a cast of multi-talented musicians who double up as her family and the main characters in her life.

The show is heavy on songs but it is light on detail. If you knew little about Cassidy's life when you arrived you would not know much more by the end but you would have enjoyed the music.
