Fiddler On The Roof, Alexandra Theatre

IT would be hard to go wrong with this classic musical set in a Jewish community in Russia 100 years ago.

A massive hit on Broadway in the 1960s, it has all the ingredients necessary for a musical - great tunes, lovable characters and a story which makes you laugh one moment and cry the next.

At its heart is the poor milkman Tevye who is attempting to retain the old traditions as the world is running apace. This new world is summed up in his eldest three daughters, each of whom break with those traditions when they fall in love.

Joe McGann is a tentative Tevye much more at ease with the quiet side of his character than with the exuberance which comes to the fore at the family wedding. Particularly moving is his duet with wife Golde, played with wry humour by Carrie Ellis.

They are given fantastic support, particularly from Tevye's daughters and their suitors.

Until March 29.
