Elephant, Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre

THIS South African blend of story-telling, song and dance is a strange choice for a commercial theatre the size of the Hippodrome as it was never likely to be a big seller.

Which is a shame as there is much to recommend this family show.

It is colourful, joyous, humorous and insightful while the puppet elephants are particularly wonderful.

At its heart is the tale of Chief Zanenvula, played by Lindani Nkosi who was recently on our small screens as company boss Hector Lepodise in The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency.

In looking back over what he believed was a good life, Zanenvula realises it was ruined by jealousy, suspicion and a desire to be number one at all costs.

This tale has much to teach us about respect for the world as well as for each other and captures the spirit of South Africa beautifully but there are times when it lacks pace and clarity. It runs until tomorrow.
