Nederlands Dans Theater 1, Birmingham Hippodrome

I didn't expect to see the day when bubble wrap formed an integral part of a dance piece but that day has arrived nonetheless.

And while there is no harm in being innovative in dance there is sometimes a sense that amid all the originality there is something missing.

In many ways this could be said of the entire triple bill by NDT1. The dancing is precise, imaginative and measured but it also seems devoid of heart.

In the angular movements, the witty asides and the intricate balances there is plenty of skill but rarely any real sense of emotional depth.

But the production showcases a lot of talent in a small group of performers whose expertise is never in doubt.
