The Harder They Come, Birmingham Hippodrome

THE Birmingham showing of The Harder They Come was something I'd eagerly anticipated.

Family members who had seen the show numerous times in London told me I'd be in for a treat and I was not disappointed.

The play, which is a translation of the 1972 film starring Jimmy Cliff, tells the story of Ivanhoe Martin who comes to the city to make it big singing reggae.

However, life is tough when he is taken advantage of by a record producer and the marijuana boss he later starts dealing for.

When he kills a police officer he becomes Jamaica's most wanted man.

The success of the musical is the mix of nostalgic music and comic timing.

The use of Jamaican patois in flawless accents by the young cast was not only authentic but fully engaged the audience. Add to this fantastic renditions of You Can Get It If You Really Want and Many Rivers To Cross provoked well-deserved responses from the audience.

It was worth every penny.
