Top Girls, Crescent Theatre

WRITTEN by a woman and consisting of an all female cast, it would be easier to regard this purely as a feminist play.

But while Caryl Churchill's script focuses heavily on the strength and determination of women to survive in 1980s Thatcherite Britain, it also ultimately explores class divides.

The play is perhaps best known for the opening scene in which Marlene, a tough businesswoman, celebrates a work promotion with a dinner party attended by extraordinary women from history.

As the drink flows, so the characters, ranging from the concubine of a 13th century Japanese Emperor to Pope Joan, reveal the pain of their sacrifices.

But, when the play moves back into reality, the audience sees beyond Marlene's hard-bitten exterior.

Performances end on Saturday.
