How To Tell The Monsters From The Misfits The Door, Birmingham Rep

THIS murder mystery comedy from writer Paul Lucas is dead funny.

I normally tune into the Midsomer Murders and Waking The Dead-type shows and Lucas obviously had too as he wound his way around a generous body count and lovable detectives in this spoof.

The small cast is excellent as angry but brilliant cop, nice but dim detective and the adorable officer who likes to think the best of everyone and can't quite stomach a crime scene bungle their way through some grizzly murders.

Laughs come thick and fast through the first half, although the comedy dips during a slower section after the interval.

Despite the slightly crazy reasoning for the killings, there is the added texture of the detectives' own relationships, leaving me with a satisfied tinge of contentment in this Morse meets Father Ted show.

It continues until May 17.
