Moon Water, Birmingham Hippodrome

LAUNCHING Birmingham's International Dance Festival, this 70 minute performance gives an indication of the diversity in store.

Cloud Gate Theatre of Taiwan offer a totally different interpretation of dance from the classical forms.

Slow, measured and precise, Moon Water blends tai chi, martial arts and dance in fluid movement. As the stage gradually fills with water, those movements sink downward to make the most of the new medium which offers both a mirror to the dance but also a tool with which to provide sudden contrast of movement.

The production is calming and beautiful, but there is also a sense of watching something without necessarily grasping its full cultural context.
